(CNN) - A North Carolina man died from a bacterial infection linked to contaminated floodwaters from Hurricane Florence.

Ron Phelps' family said he scraped his leg while doing yard work.

And he couldn't get to a hospital right away because roads were flooded.

His niece said by the time he did get help, the infection had already spread.

Doctors amputated his leg, but it wasn't enough to save his life.

There are now at least 48 deaths related to Florence.
