(RNN) - A Maryland woman who has been in a coma since being shot at the Oct. 1 at the Route 91 Music Festival in Las Vegas  is now awake, her mother reports.

Tina Frost, 27, is responding to family members and has taken her first few steps, according to her mother's latest update on a GoFundMe account set up to aid Frost's medical costs.

"...she is now waking up!" wrote Mary Watson Moreland, Frost's mother, on Friday. "She opens her left eye just a lil and looks around the room at us, taps her feet whenever music is playing, continues to squeeze our hands...She also took her first steps today with the assistance of the nurses - 3 steps to the chair and 3 steps back to the bed."

Frost suffered a gunshot wound to the head. She lost her right eye and has undergone several hours of surgery since the shooting and remains in the ICU at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas.

Frost was able to breathe on her own for six hours, Moreland wrote, adding that neurosurgeon Dr. Keith Blum will perform additional surgeries when Frost's condition improves.

The GoFundMe account set up for Frost with a goal of raising $50,000 has surpassed $500,000 in contributions.

Frost, a Maryland native who worked as an accountant in San Diego, was attending the Route 91 Harvest Festival with her boyfriend when she was hit by a bullet fired by Stephen Paddock, who opened fire from a hotel window across from the festival, leaving 58 dead and more than 500 injured.
