4 killed in Marine helicopter crash

EL CENTRO, CA (RNN) – Officials with the U.S. Marine Corps say four crew members who were aboard a Marine helicopter when it crashed Tuesday are presumed dead, The Associated Press reports.

A Marine CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter went down shortly after 2:30 p.m. near El Centro, CA.

Officials say the crash happened during a routine training mission. Its cause is under investigation.

The helicopter was with the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing out of the Miramar air station near San Diego, according to the AP.

The names of the presumed dead are being withheld pending positive identification and notification of their families.

El Centro is located in southeastern California, near the Mexican border. It is more than 100 miles from San Diego.
