ST. LOUIS (KTVI/CNN) - A bloody Thursday afternoon in North St. Louis leaves three dead and a 7-year-old girl critically wounded and fighting for her life.

"It's horrific for all of us. We are all veteran policemen. It's the worst," St. Louis Police Lt. Col Jerry Leyshock said.

One body was in the street, another on the sidewalk. It appeared one car had plowed into a parked car.

"We're combing this for every little piece of evidence we can get, and of course, we're looking for any witnesses," Leyshock said.

Witnesses seemed to be few and far between. They could be the key to solving this case, and no one was talking.

"It's of paramount importance. I want to solve this. We have families at stake. We have neighborhood residents out here. It's way too dangerous. It's in the middle of the day. I hope if someone sees it, they get in touch with us," Leyshock said.

Neighbors say the sound of gunfire is common: "It's crazy every night boom, boom boom boom boom boom boom."

Not far from this murder scene just last week the bodies of two teenage males were found shot multiple times.

The same day also in the area a shootout involved lots of gunfire between several cars at a gas station. One person suffered a minor wound, and two city forestry workers were almost hit.
