Kids react to dead whale that washed up on a beach

ANCHORAGE, AK, (RNN/KTVA/CNN) – Kids say the darnedest things, especially regarding dead whales.

A dead humpback whale washed up on the shore of Kincaid Beach in Anchorage, AK.

It was a fascinating find for children who had lots of questions.

Sophia and Juliana, both 4, wondered how he died, how did he wash up on the beach, why does he have bugs all over him, where his eyes went and most significantly, “Why does it smell?”

Scientists don’t know how the whale died, but they did say it had been in the water about 10 days when the strong tides the beach is known for brought the carcass to shore.

Despite warning signs and the staggering stench, onlookers managed to hold their noses long enough to snap photos or take selfies.

It’s a rare chance to see an animal that big up close before the tide once again carries it back out to sea.
