Judge scolds mom after son, 9, shoots self

DETROIT (WDIV/CNN) – A judge told a mother whose 9-year-old shot himself with her gun that she was “a living example of why people should not have guns in their house” during sentencing.

Shecolby Green’s 9-year-old son shot himself with his mother’s gun in March. Police say the boy found the handgun in his mother’s purse while possibly looking for candy and shot himself in the right hand.

The boy was taken to the hospital for treatment after his mother called 911. He was expected to recover.

Green was charged with second-degree child abuse and a felony firearms violation. She reached a deal by pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge.

During sentencing, Judge Dalton Roberson lectured the mother about why neither she nor anyone else should keep a gun in their home, especially with young children.

"You are a living example of why people should not have guns in their house because with your children in your house, you have to put the gun – You thought it was safe in your purse, didn't you? It wasn't, and you almost gave up your child's life for it,” Roberson said.

The judge went on to tell Green she should never buy a gun again.

Green received a sentence of three years’ probation.

At the time of the incident, the Detroit Police chief said he didn’t consider it an accident and that citizens with concealed carry licenses should receive proper gun training.

Roberson is a retired Wayne County Circuit judge who was filling in Tuesday for another judge.
