(RNN) - Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) will miss the upcoming vote on the Republican-backed tax bill, CBS and CNN reported Sunday.
McCain had been hospitalized due to complications from treatment for brain cancer.
He was reportedly in good spirits and recovering well at Walter Reed Medical Center, but McCain returned to his home in Arizona on Sunday to continue to recovery.
The Republicans hold a 52-48 majority in the Senate. With McCain gone, they can afford to lose only one more Republican vote in order to pass the bill.
The vote is expected to come this week to fulfill a promise to pass the tax cuts before Christmas. The bill has already passed the House of Representatives and Senate, but differences in each version needed to be reconciled before a final vote could take place.
