(CNN) – ISIS has claimed responsibility for a double attack that killed 50 people and injured 87 in southern Iraq on Thursday.

The attack involved an armed assault on a restaurant, followed by a car bomb blast at a nearby checkpoint in Nasiriya.

ISIS said it was targeting Shiites. ISIS is steadily losing ground in Iraq, and also in Syria, where most of Raqqa is out of ISIS control.

The militant group recently lost most of Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city.
