(CNN) - Before and after images taken by a satellite are giving people an idea of just how devastating the power outages in Puerto Rico are.

The Suomi NPP satellite captured the island territory on July 24 while its power grid was fully functional. A second image was taken on Monday and shows the island in near-total darkness.

The pictures come amid growing calls for President Donald Trump and Congress to do something to help Puerto Rico, which was ravaged by Hurricane Maria earlier this month.

The governor of the island asked Congress to approve an aid package to help the territory. Many have said the current administration is taking too long to respond, but the White House defended its efforts to help Puerto Rico.

Press secretary Sarah Sanders said there's been what she called an "unprecedented push through" of billions of dollars in federal assistance.
