TALKEETNA, AK (CNN) - A town lost a mayor who clawed his way to power 20 years ago.
Stubbs the cat died on Saturday at the age of 20, according to his owners.
He was elected honorary mayor in 1997 as a write in because viable human candidates were hard to find.
Stubbs spent much of his mayoral tenure hanging out his owner's store, where he became a major tourist attraction. He also made a number of TV appearances.
His tenure wasn't without drama. In 2013, a dog mauled Stubbs, leaving him a punctured lung, a fractured sternum and 5-inch gash on his side, CNN reported.
Stubbs' owners are hinting that their other family cat, Denali, would make a good successor.
