PITTSFIELD, NH (WMUR/CNN) – A homemade ISIS flag found in a New Hampshire town is raising concerns in the community.

People in Pittsfield, NH, woke up Monday to find a flag that police described as consistent with an ISIS flag hanging on a fence around a dam.

Some residents, like Donna Bromiley, say the black and white flag’s presence was disturbing.

“I’m very nervous, scared. I mean, it was right there,” Bromiley said.

The woman says she’s relieved the police chief took the flag down shortly after it was found.

“Given what the flag represents, it obviously causes alarm and concern within the community,” Police Chief Jeffery Cain said.

Cain says the police are confident they know the person responsible, a man who is familiar to them.

“At this point, we do have a person of interest. We have no information that would indicate any immediate threat to the community,” Cain said.

Cain says they are working with state and federal authorities.

“We are actively investigating it, and we are in communication with state and federal authorities and treating the matter very seriously,” he said.

Investigators are still determining if a crime was committed.

Republican State Rep. Michael Brewster, who lives near the dam, says he isn't sure if it is a crime and had not been aware the flag was meant to represent ISIS.

“Freedom of speech, I guess. I don't know,” he said.

Residents of the town responded to the incident by hanging up American flags around the dam. They say they are also considering a patriotic demonstration or celebration.
