FEATHER FALLS, CA (KHSL/CNN) - A young man was swept over the Feather Falls in California Thursday afternoon.
Search and rescue crews searched for hours to find him, but their efforts have been unsuccessful.
That waterfall is 410 feet tall and it's at least a four-mile hike to even get there.
Officials believed that the man was swimming in the water before he was swept over the falls.
"Where he was at, he was just above the falls in the water and there is really no place for you to grab on," Chris Haile of Cal Fire said.
A friend called 911, but he did not even know the young man's last name, which means officials do not yet know who exactly they are looking for.
Fire crews hiked about five miles to the falls and two helicopters surveyed the area, but between the turbulence and the spray from the water, it was nearly impossible to see anything.
They considered sending men to rappel down the falls, but decided it was too dangerous because of the low visibility and no sign of anyone.
Unfortunately, this isn't the first time this has happened.
In 2012, 28-year-old Mitch Padula was trying to wet his shirt in the water above the falls when he fell in and got caught in the current.
It took almost a year before a search and rescue diver found a bone in a deep pool downstream from the falls.
Officials urged people to stay out of the water above the falls
