SILVER SPRING, MD (WJLA/CNN) - A man in Maryland faces up to one year in prison for reportedly spying on child gymnasts in their restroom.
Police arrested Jonathan Oldale, who is accused of placing a hidden camera at a gymnastics center where his kids also take classes.
The camera was discovered, disguised as a key fob, in the spring. An investigation led to Oldale's arrest this month.
"I'm really proud that they saw something and just didn't let it go," Silver Stars Gymnastics owner Cherie Hope said.
Capt. Paul Starks, of the Montgomery County Police, said hidden cameras are easy to find and are a piece of modern technology people need to be aware of.
"In this day and age, we do have to be more alert and be asking why is this here?" Starks, said.
A simple internet search turned up results for hidden cameras in every type of device, including smoke alarms, picture frames, wall outlets and towel hooks.
Stark said of the ways people get caught using them is making the camera too obvious or it has a light. That's how the camera in the gymnastics school was discovered.
"If you feel that something isn't right, go with your gut," Starks said.
Oldale was charged with visual surveillance that involves prurient intent.
