(CNN) - Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women.
But according to the Centers for Disease Control, the number of heart disease deaths in the U.S. is dropping.
Some doctors attribute lower heart disease deaths to better treatments and access to health care, while others cite improving diets and exercise routines.
People who are most at risk for heart disease include those who suffer from diabetes and are overweight. Also at risk are people who maintain a poor diet with a lack of physical activity and those who consume excessive alcohol.
One of the most common symptoms of heart disease is a heart attack.
It's important to recognize the early warning signs of a heart attack, like discomfort in the chest, arms and shoulders. Other symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, lightheadedness and shortness of breath.
The CDC said about 735,000 Americans have heart attacks each year.
A recent study published in the journal Circulation said nearly half of the people studied experienced so called "silent" heart attacks and did not realize it.
To make sure your heart is in the best health possible make sure you are getting regular check-ups.
