(RNN) - Instagram sent an email to verified account users Wednesday alerting them that their information may have been accessed.
The email noted that hackers were able to get unlawful access to contact information, such as emails and phone numbers, from high-profile accounts.
The individuals accessed the information by exploiting a bug in Instagram’s application program interface.
No account passwords were compromised and the bug was fixed quickly, according to the Instagram team.
Instagram is encouraging users to be extra cautious about their account security, and look out for any suspicious activity.
Users are advised to enable two-factor authentication and to pick a strong, unique password.
Earlier this week, hackers took over Selena Gomez’s Instagram account and posted lewd pictures of her ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber.
There is no known connection between that hack and the information that Instagram released Wednesday.
