OSWEGO, NY (YNN Syracuse/CNN) - You can’t tell by looking, but there are some members of the Lighthouse Mexico Church of God who are locked and loaded.
“We have to take the provisions necessary so we are able to come and glorify our God and be safe at the same time,” said church member Meredith Williams.
The church allows guns. A sign out front lets people know it is “not a gun-free zone.”
Many in the congregation say if more churches were armed, there would be fewer mass shootings. At this church, it’s especially important for the women to be prepared. Self-defense classes are offered.
“I was no longer afraid that someone could overpower me because I had the techniques that it took to be able to take down a person that’s much bigger than me,” Williams said.
While some may not agree with their methods, this congregation believes it’s simply about being proactive.
“How would you feel if your backs were turned and your eyes were closed and your children were next to you, and somebody walked in and gunned you down?” a church member asked. “Would you not want to have that reassurance that somebody was at the door, armed and ready to protect you?”
