(RNN) - Poppy the puppy was in bad shape, but thanks to some kind people in India, he's on the road to recovery.

According to the Facebook page for Guardians of the Voiceless, Poppy was a stray born on the streets and developed a severe infection from a small wound created by his mother while carrying him.
Guardians of the Voiceless' website says it is a nonprofit organization that rescues animals and helps underprivileged children
Volunteers observed the wound becoming infected and growing to a large hole on the side of his body. It had even become infected with maggots.
So, they stepped in, cleaned and treated Poppy's wound and are caring for him until he can be returned to his canine family. They estimate he will be able to be released in about two weeks.
