NEW YORK (WABC/CNN) – A homeless man is a hero after he stopped the attacker of two elderly women.
The assault happened on Mother's Day morning.
One woman was pulling a shopping cart. The other was using a cane.
A man walked toward them, talking to himself, and attacked them without warning.
But in an instant he was confronted by another man who witnessed the attack. The man chased down the attacker and tackled him.
The good Samaritan said he was homeless. His identity hasn't been revealed.
The women, both in their seventies, were dazed after the attack. One woman was bleeding badly from her head.
Shopkeepers and residents converged on the scene as the good Samaritan struggled in the distance to restrain the man until police arrived.
The attack happened outside Shoppers World on Pitkin Avenue. Jacaira Baez, the store manager, shot video of the incident.
"On Mother's Day? It's bad," Baez said. "He's a hero. I thought he was a hero."
People were so impressed that they shook the good Samaritan's hand. He told witness he'd refused to look the other way.
"He was actually here, defending her, making sure she was all right. Making sure everybody over here was all right. Thank God he was here," said Karla Johnson, an eyewitness.
The two women were treated for their injuries at a hospital and were later released.
The suspect was identified as 45-year-old Andres Flores. He's charged with two counts of assault.
