ST. JOHNS COUNTY, FL (WFOX/WJAX/CNN) – After a child was left for hours at a Florida rest stop, police arrested three people, including the boy’s grandparents, on drug-related charges.
A female teacher called police Saturday morning after a boy came up to her car and told her he was lost, she told deputies.
The woman stayed with the boy for an hour before a deputy arrived, according to a police report.
When the deputy showed up, the boy told him he knew he was in Florida but did not know where his grandparents were. He gave deputies one of their phone numbers, but no one answered multiple phone calls.
A short time later, deputies found out the boy’s grandparents – Charlene Pitts, 56, and James Morey, 62 – along with a third woman had been in a wreck.
When the trio got back to the rest stop, the deputy said, “he could immediately tell they are all under the influence of a controlled substance.” He says he didn’t smell alcohol.
A K9 officer was brought in and got a positive hit after searching the vehicle. The trio is believed to have used “tar heroin.”
All three people were arrested. They are facing drug-related charges and a charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
The boy was taken into custody by the Department of Children and Families.
