SALT LAKE CITY, UT (KUTV/CNN) - It's time for all-girls football teams at school - that's the message six young women and their parents have for three school districts in Utah.
The Utah Girls Tackle Football League is the only all-girls game in town for people like 14-year-old Lauren Dixon.
"I play middle linebacker, and I just like going in for the sacks, going in and destroying the line," she said Wednesday.
Madelyn Calchera, 16, is a lineman.
"It's awesome; you get to hit people," she said. "And it's safe. You have pads on."
Madelyn and Lauren played for the boys teams in school. Now, the girls said it's time for schools to tackle the issue of forming girls teams on campus.
"It's not OK for boys to have more opportunities than girls," Madelyn said.
They are two of the six girls who filed a federal lawsuit against the Jordan, Granite and Canyons school districts, saying it's time to level the playing field.
"I think if the girls have the same opportunity, they would definitely jump at the chance to do so," said Jason Dixon, Lauren's dad.
He said the recreation league, with 200 players, proves there is demand for school teams. The girls hope the change comes soon, even if it doesn't benefit them.
"I just want it to be there for, like, my cousins and all my friends and maybe even my daughter," Lauren said.
