MODESTO, CA (KTXL/CNN) – A 10-year-old girl got a stomach ache Thursday after apparently eating a brownie laced with marijuana during her school's after school program.
The girl’s mother, Kari Watkins, says her daughter told her a boy in her class offered her a brownie. The little girl had no idea it might have contained drugs and unknowingly took a bite.
"She told me, ‘It didn't taste right, Mom. So, I spit it out,’” Watkins said.
Watkins says her daughter had a stomach ache and seemed loopy and very talkative.
"I can tell you that she was acting differently, and she did have a stomach ache for the rest of the evening,” Watkins said.
Watkins’ daughter was not the only student affected. A spokesperson says a child brought the brownies, which may have contained marijuana, to school and handed them out after school during the after school program.
"I'm furious. I'm heartbroken because that somewhat steals the innocence of my 10-year-old child,” Watkins said.
Watkins says she’s upset about how the school handled the situation, calling only the families who were affected and sending home a one-sentence letter. She says the school should have let all parents know about the incident.
"It’s taken care of a lot more lightly than any other drug, and I don't feel that should be the case when it comes to our children,” Watkins said.
Modesto City Schools says this isn’t the only case of potentially drugged brownies that they’re looking into. Educators say a student at Davis High School had to be rushed to the hospital after she fell ill Tuesday.
"These are two separate incidents, and it is absolutely alarming to have drugs on our campuses,” said spokeswoman Becky Fortuna with the school district.
Fortuna would not say just how many students ate the brownies.
School resource officers will be talking to the elementary school kids about the dangers of drugs. Davis High will be calling parents, asking them to talk to their kids about the dangers and repercussions of drug use.
