MINNEAPOLIS, MN (RNN) - General Mills Inc. made an announcement Wednesday that will benefit growing families. The company is calling it an industry-leading leave policy for new parents.

General Mills says mothers will be given 18 to 20 weeks paid leave. While leave for fathers, partners and adoptive parents will be 12 weeks to care for a newborn.

The company’s original leave benefit included two weeks of parental leave and six weeks maternity leave.

“General Mills has been making food people love for over 150 years and our employees have always been our secret ingredient. We want to keep innovating in how we meet their evolving needs,” said Jacqueline Williams-Roll of General Mills.

In a release, General Mills announced it will also provide employees time off to handle other family issues like caring for sick family members and longer time away for bereavement.

According to the company’s website, “the new benefits will apply to both salaried and non-union production workers in the U.S. and are intended to help all General Mills employees live happier, healthier lives both at work and at home.”
