AURORA, CO (KDVR/CNN) - There are no security cameras at the Colorado Freedom Memorial to tell us how a pane of glass got shattered.
The good news is the panel was blank, there were no names on it yet.
The bad news is it will cost more than $50,000 to fix.
There are 6,023 names – all Colorado veterans etched in glass panels in the memorial.
It appears that someone came up to one of the blank glass panels and hit it with something or shot it.
Rick Crandall, president of the Colorado Freedom Memorial Foundation said his heart sank when he saw the damage.
"It'll withstand minor earthquakes it`ll withstand wind up to 210 miles an hour. You see how thick the glass panels are and tempered,” Crandall said.
Crandall believes the damage was intentional, that someone vandalized the memorial.
"It's obvious I mean the point of impact is the thing about it, somebody had intentionally hurt the memorial," he said.
Crandall said the non-profit doesn’t have the money to fix the panel, which will have to stay put until they can raise the funds.
Congressman Mike Coffman has pledged to help lead an effort to replace the damaged glass.
A GoFundMe account is set up to cover the costs.
