INDEPENDENCE MO, (WDAF/CNN) - Thursday marked 108 years since Boy Scouts of America was founded, and for the first in the scouts 108-year history, girls can join the organization.

It’s a big tradition for the Boy Scouts, learning how to properly fold and handle the American flag.

Jody Vanway, now a Den Leader, was once a Cub Scout hopeful who in the past, did not fit the mold.

"I've watched most of these girls grow up from toddlers, where they had to just sit back and watch," said Vanway.

Den Leader Tracy Wicks watched her sons become scouts, now she’s excited her daughter is the next one in uniform.

"I just want her to have the opportunity to do the different things she saw her older brothers doing,” said Wicks."

Meeting for the first time this week, the four girls are excited they don`t just have to watch anymore.

The girls are in the Cub Scouts which is first through fifth grade.

In the future, there could be plans for the girls to join the Boy Scouts and that plan could take place as early as 2019.
