(RNN) – Zbigniew Brzezinski, former national security adviser to President Jimmy Carter, has died at the age of 89, his daughter said. 

He is the father of MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski. He died on Friday. 

From 1977 to 1981, Brzezinski was national security adviser to Carter at a time when the Cold War with the former Soviet Union was in full swing. He also helped the Carter White House navigate through the Iran hostage crisis and Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

In 1981, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

He served on numerous foreign policy boards and in similar think tanks after leaving the White House.  He also authored several books on foreign policy.
