(RNN) - Death Wish Coffee Co., which boasts the "world's strongest coffee" has voluntarily recalled its 11 oz. can of Nitro Cold Brew out of botulism concerns, the FDA said.
The Round Lake, NY-based coffee retailer and scientists from Cornell University figured out that the current production process could breed botulin, a deadly toxin, the company said.
No illnesses have been reported in association with the product, the company said.
"Our customers’ safety is of paramount importance and Death Wish Coffee is taking this significant, proactive step to ensure that the highest quality, safest, and of course, strongest Coffee products we produce are of industry-exceeding standards – thus we are taking this measure of recalling all Death Wish Nitro cans from shelves," founder and owner of Death Wish Coffee Co., Mike Brown said. "We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause our customers and our retail partners, but we believe this is the right precautionary measure to take."
The company halted production of its cold brew until it can add another step in the production process to remove botulism concerns.
Botulism is a potentially fatal type of food poisoning. Its symptoms include general weakness, dizziness, double-vision, trouble with speaking or swallowing, difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distention and constipation.
Death Wish Coffee Co. products are sold on its online store, at Price Chopper/Market 32, Healthy Living Market & Cafe and independent retailers.
Customers who bought Nitro Cold Brew should not drink it. Instead, either dispose of it, return it to the retailer with proof of purchase or contact the company for a full refund within 60 days.
