TAMPA, FL (WFLA/CNN) - A Florida church youth group, trapped by riots in Haiti, has finally returned home.
Around 30 teens were on a mission trip through their church but were blocked from entering the airport by protesters burning tires and demanding money.
Protests began last week after a steep rise in fuel prices across the island.
The group ended up going back to their compound before finally getting flights back to Tampa and Orlando days later.
“Feels good to be home for sure. We had a few extra days God gave to us to be there and we’re thankful for them,” said Pastor Jeff McCauley, who lead the trip to Haiti.
Earlier, Rioters tried to set fire to a Port-au-Prince hotel where about 120 Americans were staying.
Haiti’s prime minister announced a temporary stop to the gas price increases, which has calmed the situation down.
