JACKSONVILLE, FL (WFOX/CNN) - A man blinded by fireworks on the Fourth of July hopes to be able to see again.
Fireworks exploded in James Crook's face while he was trying to set them off.
It's taken Crook a few days to perfect doing what used to be a simple task, going to and from his favorite chair to the refrigerator to get himself something to drink.
He counts his steps.
He says the hardest part of his injury is being unable to see his children.
Crook thought he had lit a firework but bent down to re-light it and the firework blew up in his face.
"Then I remember having a towel around my face and me telling our friends that I couldn't see," he said.
His fiancee, Jenn Walker, said his eyes "were just black."
He says the doctor told him with a cornea transplant he may regain partial vision in his left eye.
"My right eye is extensively worse, much worse," he said. "They're talking probably a prosthetic cornea, if that even works."
Crook does not have health insurance.
He has a GoFundMe page for anyone who wants to help him cover his medical expenses.
