EDGEWOOD, IA (KWWL/CNN) - A Chihuahua survived a nearly 40-foot fall down a hole at an eastern Iowa state park, much to her owner’s delight.

The adventurous pup was rescued by crews from the Edgewood Fire Department.

"It was the most horrible, gut wrenching cry I have ever heard," said Kathy Thor a resident of Riverside.

Thor said she'd never seen her husband cry until they nearly lost their 12-year-old Chihuahua Miss P.

Miss P was walking off her leash at Bixby State Park when she fell down a hole.

“Then I heard her whimper,” I said, 'she is in there, she is alive,’ " Thor said.

After trying to get Miss P herself, Thor called 911.

The Edgewood Fire Department jumped into action and retrieved the dog.

“I had my eyes closed,” Thor said. “And then I heard feet shuffling and some voices. And I opened my eyes and there is a firefighter holding my dog. It was the best moment of my life.”

Miss P was able to climb back up the hole, close enough to wear fire crews could reach her.

“I decided that if she couldn't come out of that hole my life would have never been the same,” Thor said. “But because they figured it out and got her out my life goes on.”

Thor and her husband are forever grateful to the men who saved their dog.

"I will never forget them as long as I live they saved me and Miss P," she said.

The Edgewood Fire Department said this is the first time they've performed such a rescue.
