HENRIETTA, NY (WHAM/CNN) - Forget rain on your wedding day, what about a fire?
One New York couple said they turned the experience into a memorable part of their wedding reception.
Sean and Lauren O'Connell took to the dance floor after their vows when fire alarms went off.
The DJ then ordered guests to evacuate.
"We were just like OK there's no way they would have a fire drill like in the middle of it," said Lauren O'Connell.
It turned out someone left a burning cigarette outside near a vent which set mulch on fire.
Hotel and wedding guests waited in the cold for 45 minutes as Henrietta fire crews contained it.
An unexpected interruption for the O’Connell couple.
"As much as we planned and everything, that was oddly enough not on the itinerary," said Sean O'Connell.
The couple made the most out of it, posing with crews.
"It just fits us, it fits our relationship,” Lauren O’Connell said. “If it had to happen to anybody, it's appropriate for us.”
And no wedding bell blues for these newlyweds.
They're looking back with joy.
"Anything around the wedding leading up these last couple weeks, she's gotten emotional," Sean O’Connell said.
Fire officials said the wedding party was never in any real danger, but the evacuation was a necessary precaution.
