CLARKSVILLE, MD (RNN) – A Howard County firefighter died early Monday when he fell through the floor while fighting a seven-alarm fire, the Baltimore Sun reported.

The victim hasn’t been identified but he was a 13-year veteran of the department.

“Incredibly saddened to learn of the passing of a Howard County firefighter as he bravely worked to save others' lives,” Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan tweeted.

“The First Lady and I send our prayers and deepest condolences to his family, fellow firefighters, and loved ones as we mourn the loss of a hero.”

A fire department spokesman said a lightning strike may have started the fire. Three people who were inside the home at the time got out safely.

Firefighters from many departments in the area, including Anne Arundel, Carroll, Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, helped battle the blaze

The $1.2 million home is owned by Janet Siddiqui, a candidate for the Howard County Council.

Clarksville is located about 20 miles southwest of Baltimore in Howard County, the second wealthiest county in the United States, according to the Census Bureau.
