Fans get into character at Comic-Con

LOS ANGELES (CNN) - From the simple to the extravagant to the just plain amazing, the art of cosplay was on vivid display at Stan Lee's Comic-Con, the annual homage to comic book heroes and villains that drew droves of super-fans to the LA Convention Center over the weekend.

One couple who arrived as Hawkgirl and Hawkman said “a lot of blood, sweat and tears” went into making the elaborate costumes, including enormous wings.

More wings unfurled, with a bit of steam power.

“I play the steampunk Han Solo character of the Star Wars Steampunk Universe,” said one elaborately dressed attendee. “And as an airship captain, my character has the ability to use these steam-powered wings.”

This year, there were more than a few women dressed as characters traditionally depicted as men.

“I’m female Ghost Rider,” said one of those women. “I actually grew up reading all the Ghost Rider comic books, so I’m doing a Danny Ketch - so Danielle Ketch.”

A couple of women dressed up as Loki, the nemesis of Thor in the Marvel Universe.

“Honestly, a lot of people give Loki a lot of bad press, but I love that he’s complicated,” said one of the Lokis. “I love that he’s not just a one-faced villain. He has many faces.”

One participant even used natural ingredients to create his costume.

“I’m dressed as Jack O’Lantern. He’s a Spider-Man villain,” said the man wearing a black cape and an actual jack o’ lantern on his head. “He’s lesser-known. He’s one of the lower-tier villains.”

There was a brand new video character, Cuphead. The costume required a medicine ball, Saran Wrap and duct tape.

One cosplayer really got into her character.

“I’m dressed as a weeping angel from Dr. Who, and it ridiculously terrifies people,” she said. “Some people take one look at me and go running, and those are the people that I know, like, I’m following that person.”
