Family eats decades-old cereal bought at Walmart

LAKEWOOD, CO (KMGH/CNN) – A Colorado family plans to return a box of cereal to Walmart for one very good reason: the box has a printed “best by” date of Feb. 22, 1997.

The Carelse family bought a box of Quaker 100% Natural Granola cereal Monday from a Littleton, CO, Walmart. The cereal was the oats, honey and raisins variety.

It wasn’t until the family sat down for a serving that any of them realized something was terribly wrong.

"My daughter made a bowl for my wife and myself. I just started eating and thinking, ‘This tastes funny. It must be OK,’” Josiah Carelse said.

But Josiah’s wife, Anthea Carelse, noticed the box’s printed “best by” date said Feb. 22, 1997, making the cereal decades old.

"I was like, ‘Josiah, you gonna be really sick,’” Anthea Carelse said.

Anthea Carelse says she only had two bites before noticing the date, but her husband ate a full bowl.

Fortunately, Josiah Carelse is feeling fine. He plans to return the expired box to Walmart.

"We just grabbed this off the shelf, and yeah, 21 years old,” Josiah Carelse said.

The family went online to compare what a current Quaker cereal box would look like, and the new look is very different from the box they purchased.

A Walmart spokesperson says the company is looking into the matter.
