(CNN) - U.S. officials are investigating eyewitness reports that Sgt. La David Johnson's body was found with his hands tied after last month's attack in Niger, according to a Defense Department official speaking to CNN.

The U.S. military hasn't confirmed the accounts.

Johnson was one of four Americans killed in the Oct. 4 ambush.

Officials said his body was found nearly a mile away from the scene two days after the attack.

The new reports are part of an investigation into exactly what happened in the attack and its aftermath.

The investigation is happening amid a dispute between Johnson's widow and President Donald Trump over the contents of the president's condolence call, which the president said was respectful.

The widow, however, claims that Trump couldn't remember her husband's name and said the tone of the president's call made her angry.

Rep. Fredericka Wilson, D-FL, has corroborated the widow's version of the call, which led to Chief of Staff John Kelly calling Wilson names as well as death threats against the congressman.
