Ex-CIA agent starts GoFundMe to buy Twitter, delete Trump's account

(RNN) – A GoFundMe campaign sponsored by former CIA agent Valarie Plame Wilson is raising money to buy a controlling interest in Twitter and delete President Donald Trump’s account.

It claims the president's use of Twitter is reckless and capable of sparking a nuclear war with North Korea.

As of Aug. 21, it has raised roughly .000003 percent ($2,980) of its lofty $1 billion goal.

“This GoFundMe will fund the purchase of a controlling interest in Twitter,” says a statement on the campaign’s page. “At the current market rate, that would require over a billion dollars – but that’s a small price to pay to take away Trump’s most powerful megaphone and prevent a horrific nuclear war.”

Whether you think it's a feckless publicity stunt or a noble goal, it’s hard to call $1 billion a “small price.” It’s improbable the goal will be met. If it was, a “poison pill” clause could possibly derail it. However, it’s likely the campaign was simply made to protest to Trump’s bombastic use of Twitter, not actually reach its goals.

If the campaign is unsuccessful, “100 percent of the balance proceeds” will be donated to Global Zero, a charity specializing in nuclear disarmament.

Wilson is a vehement Trump detractor.

She worked for the CIA from 1985 to 2005. She was forced to resign after having her identity revealed by journalist Robert Novak in The Washington Post, an incident that led to the indictment of Scooter Libby.
