(CNN) - The Trump administration is ending subsidized gym memberships for the Environmental Protection Agency.

A spokesperson says the benefit costs American taxpayers $900,000 a year.

The EPA says it took action after employees in Las Vegas billed $15,000 worth of yearly gym memberships at a private club.

The union representing EPA employees says fitness programs save the government money through healthier employees.

EPA director Scott Pruitt blamed the Obama administration for starting the subsidies.

The 2018 fiscal budget proposed by President Donald Trump slashes EPA spending by more than 30 percent.
