(CNN) - The Mexican drug kingpin known as El Chapo is trying to postpone his trial. Attorneys for Joaquin Guzman are asking a federal judge to push the trial back to August or September.
They say they can’t prepare his defense by April, when the trial is scheduled to start. El Chapo is facing a 17-count indictment in New York related to his alleged leadership of the infamous Sinaloa Drug Cartel.
He is also known for breaking out of jail twice in Mexico before his final arrest and extradition to the U.S.
Guzman has pleaded not guilty to all charges, which carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.
