KANSAS CITY, MO (KSHB/CNN) - A new bus driver in Missouri turned into a hero, saving students as flames rip through a school bus on Wednesday.
"You could see it getting inside the cab of the bus," witness James Davis said. "He had backpacks in his arms, and he was just getting the kids off really fast."
Davis watched as flames roared from the bus engine, the driver evacuating every child inside.
"He did really well getting them kids off the bus," he said.
As students gathered on Chandler Givler's lawn, he took this video of the aftermath, while his neighbor Curtis Bennum snapped pictures.
"It was ... it was incredible though." Givler said. "It was completely melted in the front. All the windows had been shattered out due to the heat. It was pretty insane."
"The bus was burnt. The front was gone, that amazed me," Bennum said.
No students were hurt, and a second bus quickly picked them up.
All that's left now is a charred road, burnt trees, broken glass and praise for a bus driver who within seconds saved lives.
"Those things go off pretty quickly. It's a miracle they got everyone out in time," Givler said.
"He had them exiting off the back, making sure they weren't on the street, and getting them to the sidewalk. If he's considered a hero, he should be," Davis said.
The Hickman Mills School District called that bus driver a hero, saying he did everything right.
