SANTA CLARITA, CA (KCAL/KCBS/CNN) - A man was killed in a freak accident that shut down a highway for hours.
Authorities say a white Cadillac was on the northbound 14 Freeway Wednesday afternoon when a tire came loose and flew across the roadway.
The tire hit the windshield of a vehicle driving on the southbound side. The accident killed the driver instantly.
One motorist says this is not the first freak accident to happen on the freeway. She remembers her own dangerous encounter that happened recently.
"I was driving on the 14 and this car, this truck and something fell from his back, and it just hit my window. And I had to swerve to the left and I almost hit the pin. But thank God my son's with me, and he's like, 'Ma, ma, watch out," motorist Susanna Cantrell said.
A recent AAA study found that over a three-year period, road debris caused more than 200,000 crashes and 500 deaths in the U.S.
