(CNN) – The Department of Justice is asking a judge to drop the lawsuit brought by Paul Manafort, President Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman, against Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
Manafort filed the lawsuit in January, after Mueller charged him with money laundering.
The suit claims that Mueller overstepped his authority when he brought the charges.
But the Department of Justice wrote to the federal judge on Friday that the lawsuit is only trying to interfere with Mueller’s investigation.
The lawsuit also accused Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein of overreach.
Mueller is investigating possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
Trump campaign aide Rick Gates also has been charged in that investigation. Both he and Manafort pleaded not guilty.
