FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (WSVN/CNN) - Mary Jane is a good dog, but her actions have her in serious condition after a confrontation with bears.
The 3-year-old pit bull terrier was on an evening walk when she started running toward some bear cubs. The mother bear then came to protect the cubs and left the dog with some life-threatening wounds.
"The wounds are pretty extensive," veterinarian Ashley Villatoro said. "We always worry about wounds to the body wall, but in her case, she was very lucky."
Vets think the dog may have acted in a manner that saved her owner from harm.
"They're used as guard dogs, and they're very loyal and very sweet to their owners," Villatoro said.
Mary Jane has several injuries from bites and scratches and veterinarians are also treating her for air in her chest cavity. But despite the injuries, they believe her future looks good.
"She came in with multiple wounds all throughout the body, but we already sedated her, flushed them out and she's actually doing pretty well," Villatoro said. "She's critical is ICU, but doing well."
Veterinarians are using the incident to remind owners to be wary of wild animals in their area that can hurt pets.
Villatoro said Mary Jane should be well enough to go home in a few days.
