LEWISTON, ME (WMTW/CNN) - A woman took an abused chihuahua into her home two months ago. Now that dog, Motto, is coming to the rescue for his foster mother as she undergoes chemotherapy.
Motto had been thrown in the trash and found abandoned and in pain before Laurie Marcotte came into his life.
“I just sent a message,” Marcotte said. “I said if that little dog needs foster care, I would be more than happy to foster care for the little animal.”
The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society helped nurse Motto back to health. Veterinarians removed a large ulcer and pulled nearly all of the dog’s rotting teeth. Marcotte said she has been fighting for Motto since he was found.
But through Motto’s struggle, he was able to help Marcotte’s own struggle - getting through chemotherapy.
“It gave me something that I enjoyed doing, and he kept me company while I was sick, and I was sick a lot,” she said.
Marcotte has cared for many dogs, but she said Motto ranks at the top.
“All animals tend to know when you’re not feeling well,” she said. “He was just a little snuggler, just loved to sit next to me and be around it. And it was a great comfort. It really, really was.”
Officials are still trying to find Motto’s original owner.
