(RNN) – What one woman thought was an irritated eye, was the effect from a nearly three-decade long injury.

According to a study published by the British Media Journal, the woman went to her doctor because her eyelid was swollen with a growing “pea-sized” lump.

After an MRI doctors determined that the woman had a cyst.

During surgery the cyst ruptured and uncovered a hard contact lens.

According to reports, doctors questioned the woman on how the lens may have gotten there.

That’s when the woman’s mother recalled her daughter being hit in her left eye with a shuttlecock while playing badminton 28 years ago, when she was 14 years old.

The woman said she assumed that the lens fell out and was lost, however it lodged and has been embedded in her eye for the last 28 years.

Doctors say symptoms of a trapped contact lens may include redness, acute pain and light sensitivity.
