(WLKY/CNN) - As the City of Louisville mourns the loss of a fallen officer -- Detective Mengedoht's friends and family mourn the young woman they knew as Dee Dee.
"She was such an amazing person," said Sharyn Jameson, a friend.
"She was a good person too. She loved her job and she loved helping people," said Wayne Ackert, father of Mengedoht.
"Just remembering her and everything that she did and how special she really was," Jameson said.
Jameson went to high school with her and attended her visitation on Sunday.
"She was just always a happy positive person," Jameson said.
"Kindness, full of life," said Elizabet Hadel, a friend.
So, did John and Elizabet Hadel - who knew Mengedoht through her parents.
" Jovial, beautiful, and very athletic. And has been very dedicated to her job," said John Hadel, a friend.
Those who knew her best say she loved being a Louisville Metro police officer.
"She went at her job as a helper. She wanted to help people. She yes she carried a gun and she could arrest you and stuff like that. But that wasn't her purpose. Her purpose to help you no matter what your situation was," Ackert said.
Her father Wayne Ackert is still trying to make sense of her tragic death.
"She's a really really great person you know and the world lost a good person. Why God took her, I can't tell you. I don't think I’ll ever know," Ackert said.
But even though she is gone -- there's one thing those who knew her will never forget.
"She had a beautiful smile," John Hadel said.
"I saw one picture of her where she wasn't smiling and that's the only time I’ve ever seen her not smile," Ackert said.
