NEW HARMONY, UT (RNN) - A sheriff's deputy smashed his way through a frozen pond to rescue an 8-year-old boy who had fallen through the ice while chasing a dog on Christmas Day.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office said the boy was playing with other children when his dog ran away and the boy followed it out onto the frozen pond. About 25 feet from shore, the ice broke and the child fell in the frigid water.
The other children ran home and got parents to call for help.
Sgt. Aaron Thompson was among the first to respond to the call. He knew time was running out so he pulled off his police gear and ran out onto the ice to get to the boy. He broke a path through the ice with his hands and arms get to the boy. He pulled the boy out from under the ice and got him back to shore where medical personnel were waiting, the Gephart Daily reported.
The boy was airlifted to a hospital. He was alive but not conscious or alert when medics took him from the scene. There is no word on his condition.
Thompson was taken to another hospital where he was treated for hypothermia and cuts on his hands and arms from cutting through the ice.
The dog was not harmed.
