SALT LAKE CITY, UT (KUTV/CNN) - A Utah woman sought asylum on the same day she was to be deported.
Vicky Chavez has lived in the United States for nearly four years.
She said she fled Honduras to escape rape and domestic violence as well as the economic and social problems in the country.
Chavez was set to board a plane Tuesday but changed her mind at the last minute and went to the First Unitarian Church in Salt Lake City.
"This is the last option," Chavez said.
Amy Dominguez with Unidad Inmigrante says volunteers will stay with Chavez 24-7, every day she needs to be there.
ICE agents, with a warrant, can enter the church and detain people like Chavez regardless of sanctuary.
