A school assignment rating "Whom to leave behind" based on things like race, religion and sexuality was given to Cuyahoga Falls Middle School students, according to a City Councilmember who brought it to everyone's attention during Wednesday night's meeting.
Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio City Councilmember Adam Miller (Ward 6) said the assignment was given out to students at Roberts Middle School, 3333 Charles St. Roberts Middle School is for students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades.
The Cuyahoga Falls Superintendent Dr. Todd Nichols issued a statement late Thursday morning that read, ""they were just made aware of the situation and are investigating."
Students were asked to identify who they would leave behind if the "Earth is doomed for destruction."
Cleveland 19 received a copy of the assignment from a parent in Cuyahoga Falls.
The school-issued assignment states that due to space limitations, only eight individuals can go.
The list identifies people by race, religion, sexual preference and physical disabilities.
The assignment gives each students five minutes to decide who is "most deserving," then asks students to form a consensus in a group in which they decide the eight "passengers" who will make the trip.
Examples of the choices include:
- A homosexual male, professional athlete.
- A 21-year-old, female, Muslim international student.
- An Asian, orphaned, 12-year-old boy.
Students were asked to choose eight to save from the list of 12.
This is a developing story. Roberts Middle School declined to comment. Cleveland 19 News also has a call out to the Cuyahoga Falls School District seeking comment.
