SCOTT TOWNSHIP, PA (WNEP/CNN) – A bank customer wrestled and took down a would-be bank robber on Friday.
As surveillance video shows, the brave good Samaritan didn't hesitate in stopping the robbery.
"He is exceptionally brave to have done that. I certainly would not have encountered anybody with a gun, I wouldn't have tried to do it," said Donna Shaw, who lives near the bank.
Robert Sakosky and two other customers were waiting in line at the Honesdale National Bank just before noon on Friday.
Scott Township Police say that's when John Ryall rushes in wearing a mask and waving a gun to rob the place.
Ryall gets the clerk to put money in a bag, but suddenly Sakosky tackles Ryall forcing him to the floor where the two men struggle off camera.
When the men come out of the corner, Sakosky slams Ryall to the floor then takes the gun from him and throws the bag of money across the room.
Sakosky manages to get Ryall's mask off who then flees the bank. Sakosky comes outside, sees police and points them in the direction or Ryall.
Officers charged Ryall after Sakosky and bank employees identified him as the robber.
Sakosky is the general manager of the Carbondale Grand Hotel. He wasn't there but his employees say they were both shocked and proud of what he did.
"He's definitely a hero, but he's just a normal guy. I mean, he's personable, he's a good boss, he never gets angry, I'm honestly surprised he did it," said employee Wade Nordahl.
Ryall faces a slew of charges, including robbery and making terrorist threats.
He is locked up in the Lackawanna County Prison and is due in court next week.
