Cruz talks about porn tweet, tax reform

Posted

(CNN) - For one brief moment, President Trump’s Twitter account wasn’t the one setting Washington abuzz. Late Monday night, Senator Ted Cruz’s account “liked” a tweet of a porn video. The senator’s office initially said his staff had reported the issue to Twitter, then later said it was a staffer with access to the senator’s account.

Then on Wednesday, Cruz discussed the tweet in depth with CNN’s Dana Bash.

"I will say Twitter went crazy with it. It became trending," Cruz said. "As soon as we found out about it, we pulled it down, and it’s generated a lot of amusement. It has prompted a lot of jokes. I understand that. I saw one person joking online that, 'If only this had happened in the presidential (campaign), Cruz might be in the White House right now.'"

Cruz said he and his aides have talked to the staffer in question and, “It’s not going to happen again.” The senator said he did not appreciate what others are calling the irony of his situation, with some emphasizing that he once defended a Texas law banning the sale of sex toys.

He said as the state’s solicitor general at the time, his job was to defend laws passed by the legislature.

“One of those laws was a law restricting the sale of sex toys. It was a stupid law,” Cruz said. “I am one of the most libertarian members of the Senate. I think it’s idiotic, but it’s an opportunity for knuckleheads in the media to say, ‘Oh, isn’t this ironic that Cruz wants to ban these things.’

“I am saying that consenting adults should be able to do anything they want in their bedrooms,” he said. “The media and the left seem obsessed with sex.”
