(CNN) - Craigslist announced it is shutting down its personals section.

A representative of the classified advertisement website said Friday it will no longer operate the portion of its website that allows individuals to seek encounters with strangers.

The change comes only two days after the Senate approved of bipartisan legislation called the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act, which paves the way for sex trafficking victims to sue websites that facilitate their abuse. The House passed its own version, the Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act.

The legislation awaits President Donald Trump's signature.

The personals section is still visible on the Craigslist homepage for now, but it redirects users to the announcement about the shutdown.

"U.S. Congress just passed HR 1865, "FOSTA," seeking to subject websites to criminal and civil liability when third parties (users) misuse online personals unlawfully.," the website says. "Any tool or service can be misused. We can't take such risk without jeopardizing all our other services, so we are regretfully taking Craigslist personals offline.

"Hopefully we can bring them back some day. To the millions of spouses, partners, and couples who met through Craigslist, we wish you every happiness!"
